These terms apply to items purchased through our online shop. Bespoke garments and commissioned work are arranged directly with us and are not shipped under this policy. If you have commissioned a garment, we will agree delivery or collection with you.
Orders are sent with DHL Express or Australia Post within Australia and internationally, and may require a signature on delivery.
Orders are generally shipped within 3 business days of receipt.
Shipping transit times can vary, but are estimated below.
Within Australia, metropolitan areas: 2 business days.
Within Australia, outside metropolitan areas: up to 5 business days.
Rest of the world: 3 to 7 business days.
These are guides. Occasionally circumstances outside our control cause delays, and we will keep you informed if that happens.
Delivery cost is calculated at checkout and depends on destination and order size. Complimentary shipping is available on orders over $500 shipped within Australia, excluding the value of any sale items.
We do not currently offer a delivery duty paid service. Orders delivered outside Australia may attract local taxes and duties, which are payable by the recipient. These are set by the destination country and are outside our control.
You will receive tracking details by email once your order has been dispatched.
Nothing in this policy limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. If an item is faulty, not as described, or does not do what it is meant to do, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund.
If an item arrives with a fault, does not match its description on our website, or is not what you ordered, contact us within 14 days of delivery. We will arrange return shipping at our cost and replace, exchange or refund the item.
For unused accessories in original condition, we accept returns within 14 days of delivery for exchange or refund. Return shipping for change of mind is at your cost. Books are not returnable for change of mind unless faulty.
Bespoke garments are cut and made for one person from a pattern drafted for them, and cannot be resold or returned for change of mind. This is the nature of the work rather than a restriction we impose. The fitting process exists precisely so that fit and style are resolved before a garment is finished. If something is not right, we correct it. Where a garment has left our hands and an adjustment is needed later, we offer an alterations service. Alterations are charged at $175 per hour including GST, quoted before work begins, and usually take around two weeks. If a bespoke garment has a genuine fault in materials or workmanship, your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply and we will put it right.
For shop orders, you can change or cancel before the order has been dispatched. Once dispatched, the returns terms above apply. For bespoke commissions, speak to us as early as possible. Once cloth has been cut, a commission cannot be cancelled, and any deposit paid is applied to the work already undertaken.
Contact us with your order number and a description of the issue. We will reply within two business days with instructions.
When you buy something from our shop we collect the information needed to complete the sale: your name, delivery address, email address and payment details. Payment details are handled by our payment provider and are not stored by us. When you browse the site we receive standard technical information such as your IP address, browser and operating system. When you make an appointment or enquiry we collect the details you give us, and we keep a record of your measurements, preferences and orders so that we can serve you properly over time. For a bespoke client, this record is the working history of your pattern.
To fulfil orders and commissions, to communicate with you about your work with us, and, if you have opted in, to send occasional updates by email. We do not sell your information.
When you give us personal information to complete a transaction, verify a payment, arrange delivery or make an appointment, we take it that you consent to us collecting it for that purpose. If we want to use your information for anything else, such as marketing, we will ask you first. You can withdraw consent at any time by contacting us. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link.
We disclose personal information only where required by law, or where necessary to fulfil an order, for example providing a delivery address to our courier.

We take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold. Payment information is encrypted in transit and handled by our payment provider under industry standards.

Appointments at our Sydney atelier can be booked here, or through the booking link at the top of any page. If you would prefer to speak with us first, email contact@jhcutler.com or telephone +61 2 9232 7122. Let us know a preferred day and a little about what you have in mind.
We see clients by appointment only, Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 5:30pm. After hours and Saturday appointments can usually be arranged, so mention it when you book here. We are closed on public holidays.
Allow around an hour for a first consultation, which covers choosing cloth, setting the direction of style and fit, and taking your measurements. Later fittings are shorter, usually between thirty minutes and an hour, and are spaced four to six weeks apart.
Our atelier is a combined showroom and workroom space on Pitt Street in the heart of Sydney. By design it allows clients to see the work taking place, and it is also home to our extensive range of fabric samples. This is the ideal place to begin your commission, however if it is not convenient for you too attend and you would like to discuss the possibility of a home or office visit, please get in touch with us here.
Not at present. If you are planning to travel to Sydney, tell us your travel dates when you enquire, and we can arrange a schedule with you.
Any plans to travel for trunk shows will be announced via our newsletter, contact us here to be subscribed.
Bespoke tailoring means that the garments are made from scratch for one person. A paper pattern is drafted to your measurements and posture, the cloth is cut to that pattern, and the garment is crafted by hand across a series of fittings. It is not a term for a high standard of clothing in general. It describes a specific process. Our Craft is a dedicated page that describes what that process involves in detail.
The difference lies in where the pattern comes from. Made to measure begins with an existing pattern adjusted to your measurements, usually within set limits. Bespoke begins with nothing: a new pattern is drawn for your body alone, then corrected through fittings as the garment takes shape, which allows for changes an adjusted pattern cannot accommodate.
The distinction matters, because a great deal of the bespoke tailoring market in Sydney uses bespoke language to describe made to measure. Our Craft page explains what genuine bespoke tailoring involves and what to look for if you are considering embarking on your first commission, or just educating yourself.
The first fitting is called a baste, after the temporary stitches holding the garment together at that stage. It looks unfinished because it is, and generous extra cloth is left in the seams on purpose. That is what makes it useful, as almost anything about the proportion and style can still be changed at this point in the bespoke tailoring process.
For a new bespoke tailoring client we usually require six months depending on the order size and complexity. The process runs across several fittings spaced four to six weeks apart, with your pattern corrected between each one, and once that pattern exists later commissions move considerably faster.
Bespoke trousers can be produced with a shorter lead time given the reduced complexity compared to jackets and overcoats.
Bespoke shirts take approximately eighteen weeks for a first commission, and less thereafter.
The number of pure bespoke garments we can produce in our Pitt Street atelier is limited due to the very time consuming nature of this work, so for a commission with a fixed date, a wedding in particular, book here as early as you can to ensure we can meet your deadline.
For bespoke tailoring there are three distinct fitting stages: the baste, the pocket baste and the forward fitting.
In practice four or more appointments usually take place including the initial consultation, because a fitting stage may be repeated where an adjustment needs checking before the work goes further.
For bespoke shirts, a first commission runs across four stages, including a fitting of a toile and a fitting of the first finished shirt. See our Bespoke Shirt Maker page for more detail about the process.
Bespoke two-piece suits start from $13,000, jackets from $10,000 and trousers from $3,000.
Bespoke shirts start from $595, with a three-shirt minimum on a first commission.
All prices are in Australian dollars and vary with the cloth and style chosen. The price of a bespoke garment reflects the hours involved. A bespoke jacket takes around sixty hours of skilled work in our Sydney atelier, almost all of it by hand.
A 50% deposit is taken when the commission is placed, and depending upon the timeline instalments may be requested at specific fitting stages. The balance payable on completion, prior to delivery.
To begin a commission, please book here. For enquires please contact us here.
Not at present. Our current offering consists only of bespoke. Made to measure returns to J.H. Cutler through CANVAS, our second line, which relaunches in January 2027. To be told when CANVAS opens, contact us and ask to be notified when this offering becomes available once again.
Made to measure begins with an existing pattern equivalent to a ready to wear size. Your measurements are taken, the closest base pattern is selected, and that pattern is adjusted within set limits to suit you.
A try-on garment is often used to establish the starting size. It is a legitimate and useful way to make clothing. Made to measure costs less than bespoke, takes less time, and requires fewer visits, and for a great many people it is the right choice.
The practical difference lies in how much the fit can be changed. A made to measure pattern is adjusted; a bespoke pattern is drawn from nothing for one body and refined through fittings as the garment takes shape.
Bespoke can therefore accommodate posture, asymmetry and proportion that an adjusted pattern cannot, which is also why it takes longer and costs considerably more. Neither is better in the abstract, and the choice depends on what you need from the garment. The difficulty in the Sydney tailoring market is not that made to measure exists, but that it is so often sold as bespoke. Our Craft is a dedicated page describing some of what genuine bespoke tailoring involves.
CANVAS will be comprised of a made to measure tailoring program that will include two levels: an ‘artisanal’ made to measure product that is bench made by tailors to a traditional hand made bespoke standard, and a ‘classic’ made to measure product that is machine-made ,with full floating canvas and some hand finishing, on a production line by a partner factory in Europe.
Both will be cut from our house block, developed in collaboration with our partner producers.
Pricing will be confirmed closer to the relaunch in January 2027. If you would like to be told when CANVAS opens, contact us and ask to be added to the CANVAS list.
Lead times for our made to measure offering are yet to be confirmed but will likely be from 8 to 16 weeks, for machine made full-canvas, and artisanal hand made options respectively.
Although it can vary, made to measure generally requires three visits including initial consultation and fitting, the second fitting where the finished or semi-finished garments are tried on, and a third visit for collection if any adjustments are required after the second fitting.
Made to measure pricing is yet to be confirmed, but will likely range from $3,000 to $4,000 AUD for machine-made full-canvas, and $7,000 to $8,000 AUD for artisanal hand-made.
