I was a teenager who gave clothing more thought than was probably reasonable, but didn’t yet know how to channel that inclination.
Years pass and after completing a Cert. IV in clothing production I began an Adv. Dip. of Fashion Design in Sydney on the strength of a portfolio, and a drawing exam. I learned my interest wasn’t designing clothes in the abstract, but making them. The transformation of an idea into something a person could wear felt like something worth understanding deeply.
While assisting a senior student in 2008 I found myself at J.H. Cutler, where I met John Cutler for the first time.
This chance meeting led to a six month internship in the workroom, and on graduating in 2009 John offered me a job as his assistant. I started in February 2010 and never left.
I spent the next 12 years working alongside him, learning the practice of bespoke tailoring from one of its most accomplished living practitioners. In 2022, on his retirement at seventy-three, he passed the stewardship of J.H. Cutler to me.
Kim grew up in Busan and has been making tailored clothing since adolescence. His practice embodies a methodical rigour forged in the demanding discipline of the Korean tailoring tradition. When John Cutler sought him out in 2008 and brought him and his family to Australia, Kim spent years working alongside Genaro Scura, a coat maker whose talent was revered in the Australian bespoke community, rebuilding and refining his technique until it met the same standard. He is now one of the most accomplished coat makers in the country.
His knowledge and depth of experience is of a kind that is difficult to put into words, which is perhaps why it is best communicated through the work itself. Patient and unassuming, Kim brings to each garment he makes an understanding that takes a lifetime to accumulate.
Rhys came to tailoring through the theatre. He studied at NIDA in Sydney, where an encounter with costume tailoring redirected him entirely. He first worked at J.H. Cutler under John Cutler in the early 2010s. After that he honed his skills at several other Sydney tailoring establishments, then spent years working on and around Savile Row before returning to Australia in 2019. Sam asked him back to the house in 2022.
A tailor with an unusually broad skill set, his specialism during his first few years here has been trouser and waistcoat making; and his focus is now on jacket making under Kim. Reserved and self-contained, Rhys is driven by the standard of the work, employing the efficiency and exactitude of a professional master craftsman.
Julian studied philosophy and biology at the University of Sydney before finding his way to tailoring. After completing a course in fashion technology at TAFE, he enrolled at the Scuola di Alta Sartoria Artigianale in Milan, completing an intensive twelve month course in bespoke tailoring. After a short time working in London he returned to Australia specifically to join J.H. Cutler in early 2025.
Relaxed, personable and genuinely curious, his presence has been as welcome in the workroom as his skills. He is specialising in the craft of bespoke trouser making, training under Rhys.
